কাগজ প্রথম তৈরি হয়েছিল চীনে, প্রায় ১০০ খ্রিস্টপূর্বাব্দে। এটি শণ বা হেম্পের মতো গাছপালা ব্যবহার করে বানানো হয়েছিল, যা ছিল লেখার উপকরণের ইতিহাসে এক যুগান্তকারী আবিষ্কার।

আজ আমরা লেখার জন্য যে কাগজ ব্যবহার করি, তার শুরুটা কিন্তু খুব সাধারণ ছিল। ভাবুন তো, কাগজের আগে মানুষ কিসে লিখত? বাঁশ, কাঠ বা দামি রেশমের মতো ভারী ও ব্যয়বহুল জিনিসের ওপর। এই সমস্যার সমাধান আসে প্রাচীন চীন থেকে।
প্রায় ১০০ খ্রিস্টপূর্বাব্দের দিকে চীনারা প্রথম কাগজ তৈরির কৌশল আবিষ্কার করে। তারা শণ (হেম্প), তুঁত গাছের ছাল, পুরনো কাপড় এবং মাছ ধরার জালের মতো জিনিসপত্র পানিতে মিশিয়ে এক ধরনের মণ্ড তৈরি করত। এরপর সেই মণ্ড পাতলা আস্তরণের মতো ছড়িয়ে শুকিয়ে নেওয়া হতো। এভাবেই তৈরি হতো হালকা এবং লেখার উপযোগী কাগজ।
এই আবিষ্কার ছিল এককথায় বিপ্লবী। কাগজ ছিল সস্তা, হালকা এবং সহজে বহনযোগ্য। এর ফলে জ্ঞান, বিজ্ঞান এবং সংস্কৃতির প্রচার ও প্রসার অনেক সহজ হয়ে যায়। চীনের এই আবিষ্কারটিই ধীরে ধীরে সারা বিশ্বে ছড়িয়ে পড়ে এবং সভ্যতার অগ্রযাত্রায় এক নতুন দিগন্ত খুলে দেয়।
