বরফ এবং তরল পানির মধ্যে ঘনত্বের পার্থক্য আছে। বরফ তরল পানির চেয়ে প্রায় ৯% কম ঘন। এই ঘনত্বের পার্থক্যের কারণেই বরফ তরল পানির উপরে ভেসে থাকে। এটা একটা অনন্য বৈশিষ্ট্য, কারণ বেশিরভাগ পদার্থ তাদের তরল অবস্থার চেয়ে তাদের কঠিন অবস্থায় বেশি ঘন হয়।
