যেকোনো একটি জোড় সংখ্যার সাথে একটি বিজোড় সংখ্যা যোগ করলে তার ফল সবসময় বিজোড় হয়। এটি গণিতের একটি মৌলিক এবং মজার নিয়ম। এর পেছনের যুক্তিটাও খুব সহজ।

জোড় আর বিজোড় সংখ্যা যোগ করলে তার ফল যে সবসময় বিজোড় হবে, এটা গণিতের একটা খুব সহজ নিয়ম। যেমন, ৪ (জোড়) আর ৫ (বিজোড়) যোগ করলে হয় ৯, যা একটি বিজোড় সংখ্যা। আবার ১০০ (জোড়) এর সাথে ১৩ (বিজোড়) যোগ করলে হয় ১১৩, সেটাও বিজোড়!
এর কারণটা খুবই সোজা। জোড় সংখ্যা মানে হলো যাকে ২ দিয়ে ভাগ করা যায়, অর্থাৎ এর সবগুলো সদস্যের একটি সঙ্গী বা জোড়া আছে। যেমন, ৬ মানে তিনটি জোড়া (২+২+২)। এখানে কোনো কিছুই একা থাকে না।
অন্যদিকে, বিজোড় সংখ্যার ক্ষেত্রে সবসময় একটি সদস্য একা থেকে যায়, তার কোনো জোড়া হয় না। যেমন, ৭ মানে তিনটি জোড়া আর একটি একা (২+২+২+১)। যখন আমরা একটি জোড় আর একটি বিজোড় সংখ্যাকে একসাথে করি, তখন সবগুলোর জোড়া মিলে গেলেও বিজোড় সংখ্যার সেই একা সদস্যটি শেষ পর্যন্ত একাই থেকে যায়। একারণেই মোট যোগফলটা বিজোড় হয়।
