অনেকেই লন্ডনের গ্রিনিচ রয়্যাল অবজারভেটরিতে যান ঐতিহাসিক প্রাইম মেরিডিয়ান বা মূল মধ্যরেখা দেখতে। ১৮৮৪ সালে এখানেই ০ ডিগ্রি দ্রাঘিমাংশ (longitude) ঠিক করা হয়েছিল, যা পুরো পৃথিবীর সময় ও মানচিত্রের ভিত্তি ছিল। এই রেখাটি 'এয়ারি ট্রানজিট সার্কেল' নামের একটি টেলিস্কোপের ওপর ভিত্তি করে তৈরি।
কিন্তু আপনি যদি আপনার স্মার্টফোনের জিপিএস চালু করে ওই লাইনে দাঁড়ান, দেখবেন আপনার লোকেশন ০ ডিগ্রি দ্রাঘিমাংশ দেখাচ্ছে না। এর কারণ হলো, আধুনিক স্যাটেলাইট প্রযুক্তি পৃথিবীর ভরকেন্দ্রকে (center of mass) ভিত্তি করে দ্রাঘিমাংশ মাপে, যা অনেক বেশি সূক্ষ্ম।
পুরনো দিনের পরিমাপ স্থানীয় মাধ্যাকর্ষণের ওপর নির্ভরশীল ছিল, কিন্তু স্যাটেলাইট পুরো পৃথিবীকে একটি একক বস্তু হিসেবে দেখে। এই দুই পদ্ধতির পার্থক্যের কারণেই জিপিএস অনুযায়ী আসল প্রাইম মেরিডিয়ানটি ঐতিহাসিক রেখা থেকে প্রায় ১০২.৫ মিটার (৩৩৬ ফুট) পূর্বে সরে গেছে। তাই পর্যটকদের জন্য পুরনো রেখাটি ঐতিহাসিক হলেও, আমাদের সব ডিজিটাল ডিভাইস নতুন অদৃশ্য রেখাটিই ব্যবহার করে।
