রেনেসাঁ যুগের শিল্পীরা ভেজা প্লাস্টারের ওপর ছবি আঁকতেন। প্লাস্টার শুকানোর সাথে সাথে রঙটাও দেয়ালের একটি স্থায়ী অংশ হয়ে যেত। এই অসাধারণ কৌশলের নামই 'বুওন ফ্রেস্কো' বা আসল ফ্রেস্কো।

কখনো ভেবেছেন, গির্জা বা প্রাসাদের দেয়ালে আঁকা কয়েকশ বছরের পুরোনো ছবিগুলো কীভাবে এখনো এত জীবন্ত? এর পেছনের রহস্য হলো 'বুওন ফ্রেস্কো' (Buon Fresco) নামের এক বিশেষ কৌশল, যার অর্থ ইতালীয় ভাষায় 'আসল ফ্রেস্কো'।
এই পদ্ধতিতে শিল্পীরা সদ্য লাগানো ভেজা চুন-সুরকির প্লাস্টারের ওপর জলরঙে ছবি আঁকতেন। প্লাস্টারটি যখন শুকাতো, তখন বাতাসের কার্বন ডাই অক্সাইডের সাথে একটি রাসায়নিক বিক্রিয়া ঘটত। এই প্রক্রিয়ায় রঙ প্লাস্টারের ভেতরে একেবারে গেঁথে গিয়ে দেয়ালেরই একটি স্থায়ী অংশে পরিণত হতো। ফলে ছবিটি আর মুছে যাওয়ার বা নষ্ট হওয়ার ভয় থাকত না।
যেহেতু ভেজা প্লাস্টারের ওপর কাজ করতে হতো, তাই শিল্পীদের হাতে সময় থাকত খুব কম। প্রতিদিন যতটুকু প্লাস্টার করা হতো, ঠিক ততটুকুই এঁকে শেষ করতে হতো। মাইকেলেঞ্জেলো এবং রাফায়েলের মতো বিখ্যাত রেনেসাঁ শিল্পীরা এই কৌশলে অসাধারণ সব শিল্পকর্ম তৈরি করে গেছেন, যা আজও আমাদের মুগ্ধ করে।
