আমরা সবাই জানি পৃথিবী নিজ অক্ষের ওপর ঘুরছে। এই ঘূর্ণনের জন্য যে কাল্পনিক অক্ষ বা দণ্ডটি আমরা চিন্তা করি, সেটি পৃথিবীর পৃষ্ঠকে উত্তর ও দক্ষিণ দিকে দুটি বিন্দুতে ছেদ করে। এর মধ্যে উত্তরের বিন্দুটিই হলো ভৌগোলিক উত্তর মেরু।
এই বিন্দুর অক্ষাংশ হলো ঠিক ৯০° উত্তর। মজার ব্যাপার হলো, এখানে কোনো নির্দিষ্ট দ্রাঘিমাংশ নেই। কারণ পৃথিবীর সমস্ত দ্রাঘিমা রেখা এই একটি বিন্দুতেই এসে মিলিত হয়েছে। তাই উত্তর মেরুতে দাঁড়ালে আপনি একই সাথে সব দ্রাঘিমা রেখায় অবস্থান করবেন এবং এখান থেকে যেকোনো দিকে গেলেই আপনি দক্ষিণে যাবেন।
এই কারণেই ভৌগোলিক উত্তর মেরু আমাদের জন্য এত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। এটি দিক নির্ণয়, মানচিত্র তৈরি এবং গ্লোবাল পজিশনিং সিস্টেম (GPS)-এর জন্য একটি স্থির নির্দেশক বা রেফারেন্স পয়েন্ট হিসেবে কাজ করে। পৃথিবীর সবকিছুর অবস্থান মূলত এই মেরু এবং বিষুবরেখার সাপেক্ষেই মাপা হয়।
